By now we are family and you know how incredibly greedy in love with food I am. I make it a mission to attend as many food events that I can afford. Sometimes I get to go to one a year, sometimes I get to attend several.
I try not to limit my palate. I generally keep an open mind when it comes to trying new food...food allergies, tofu, and squid being the exceptions. I just don't like squid and tofu, regardless of the preparation.
I have been following Chef E Dot (Eric Smith) for some time. I am impressed with the brother! I have attended events in the past where he was the chef, but had never really felt like I could truly connect the man to the food. The Black Plate was different. This was all him. He was in his element and you could feel his love for the food. It's the chef's connection. It's the reason I don't cook or bake when I'm in a bad mood. You can taste the love.
What is The Black Plate? An underground dining experience. You don't get the menu, you get a time and location. You show up and you marvel at the time that has been spent to put together this event.
You sit at the bar and you have specially curated cocktails during the cocktail hour. You mix and mingle with other diners and marvel at whatever entertainment is provided. This particular time it was a live painting by T. Mix Art and delicious juice samples provided by Dirty Water Raw Juices.
When the dinner begins, it starts with a toast. Ours was champagne with 24K gold flakes. It was fancy y'all! Dinner is served course by course at one long dining table. You make new friends. You try new foods. Your mind is blown.
Our hostess Sam Rawsteen - who has her own list of accomplishments - was beautiful and warm. I seriously felt like I could just hang out with everyone that was there and we would be the best of friends.
The first course was served blindfolded. It was a deep fried wonton with baked brie and cranberries. I ate most of it before taking off the blindfold and didn't get a picture.
I went alone. It was my birthday treat to myself and none of my friends could make it. I was content and enjoyed the company of new friends that will hopefully not become strangers. I would do it all over again!

Every single dish was delicious! All of it! I left completely satisfied and happy.
Get into underground dining y'all! I will definitely continue to join this movement! I'm going to save up my coins so I can host a fancy dinner and have Chef E Dot to wow us. This was one of the best presents I have ever given to myself! I forgot to mention that this event SOLD OUT. So if you are thinking of attending, buy your tickets when you see them available!
XOXO,
RoJo

I couldn't help but feel like I was the inspiration behind this beauty! I wasn't, but I won't tell myself that! |
